Just about a shoo-in for Hong Kong's most unexpected film of 2008, City Without Baseball stars the real-life members of the Hong Kong Baseball Team in a daring, baring drama about baseball dreams, urban soul searching, and tangled relationships. Baseball is a nary-followed sport in Hong Kong and many locals don't know that the city actually has an official baseball team. In fact, when promotion posters for City Without Baseball showed up in Hong Kong, many people initially thought the film was Japanese. But City Without Baseball is most definitely a Hong Kong film, albeit one that completely defies expectations with its baseball player cast, sexual themes, postmodern musings, and full-frontal nudity scenes.

The members of the Hong Kong Baseball Team, who signed on to City Without Baseball in hopes of generating interest in the sport and the team, deliver brave, eyebrow-raising performances. Blurring the line between fact and fiction, the players use their real names in the film, and many of their baseball stories and experiences, as well as real game footage, are integrated into the film's fictional narrative. Though director Lawrence Lau (My Name is Fame) shares billing, City Without Baseball is mainly a labor of love from first-time director Scud who also wrote and produced the film.

Beginning with the fresh arrival of Taiwan coach John Tai, City Without Baseball follows the underdog team's growth amid player tensions, locker room drama, and myriad personal issues. Charismatic team star Chung (Leung Yu) has a serendipitous encounter with a mysterious, suicidal girl (Monie Tung, Whispers and Moans), while insecure rookie pitcher Ron (Ron Heung) struggles with a whole laundry list of relationship and identity problems including spats with teammates, an unfaithful girlfriend (Gia Lin, The Pye-Dog), and ambiguous feelings for Chung.

This release comes with a booklet and special features (making of, deleted scenes, trailer).

  • Red Cliff (DVD) (2-Disc Edition) (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region All Tony Leung Chiu Wai (Actor) | Takeshi Kaneshiro (Actor) | Vicki Zhao (Actor) | Zhang Feng Yi (Actor)
Legendary director John Woo (A Better Tomorrow, The Killer) returns to Asia after fifteen years in Hollywood with Red Cliff, his adaptation of the Chinese classic, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Woo's epic is much more faithful and grand than the recent Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon, but the director still puts his own personal stamp on the material, concentrating on his human heroes, their personal relationships, and above all the brotherhood they forge in the heat of battle. The first of two films chronicling the legendary battle, Red Cliff is without doubt the Chinese film event of the year.

Re-teaming with Woo for the first time since 1992's Hard Boiled is Tony Leung Chiu Wai, fresh from his Golden Horse Award-winning turn in Lust, Caution. Leung plays the role of strategist Zhou Yu, and stepped in to help old friend John Woo when original lead Chow Yun Fat vacated the leading role. Rounding out the all-star cast are Kaneshiro Takeshi (The Warlords), Chang Chen (The Go Master), Zhang Feng Yi (The Emperor and the Assassin), Vicki Zhao (Shaolin Soccer), Hu Jun (Infernal Affairs 2), Japanese actor Nakamura Shidou (Fearless), and in her debut performance, Taiwanese model Lin Chi Ling.

208 A.D., The Battle of Chang Ban. Liu Bei (You Yong) and his followers narrowly escape the armies of Prime Minister Cao Cao (Zhang Feng Yi), but Cao Cao's lust for power continues to grow. Fearing that Liu Bei and the Kingdom of Shu cannot oppose Cao Cao, strategist Zhuge Liang (Kaneshiro Takeshi) proposes an alliance with the Kingdom of Wu. However, Wu ruler Sun Quan (Chang Chen) is uncertain on challenging Cao Cao. Zhuge Liang instead looks to persuade Sun Quan's chief strategist Zhou Yu (Tony Leung Chiu Wai), and discovers in Zhou a kindred spirit versed in the arts as well as battle. The two men form an instant bond, and decide to battle Cao Cao at the water port of Red Cliff. Their alliance comes not a moment too soon, as Cao Cao approaches with an army that vastly outnumbers the combined Wu and Shu forces. But Zhuge Liang has a plan - one that will hopefully enable the smaller force to emerge victorious.

  • Rule#1 (DVD) (Hong Kong Version) DVD Region All Ekin Cheng (Actor) | Shawn Yue (Actor) | Stephanie Che (Actor) | Kelvin Tong (Director)
Rule #1: there are no ghosts.

Shawn Yue (Shamo) and Ekin Cheng (Heavenly Mission) form a ghost-busting tag team in the supernatural buddy-cop thriller Rule #1. Helmed by Singapore director Kelvin Tong (The Maid, Love Story), this engaging and entertaining film revolves around a special paranormal crime unit of the Hong Kong police force, and the two weary cops tasked to contain the city's malicious ghosts while keeping it all a secret. Rule #1's premise is similar to X-Files or Hong Kong's own 2002, but delves deeper into horror elements with a moody intensity. Putting on weight to play the charismatic veteran cop with the world on his shoulders, Ekin Cheng shared the Best Actor Award with skeptical partner Shawn Yue at the 12th Pucheon Fantastic Film Festival for their outstanding performances in the film.

Tired beat cop Lee (Shawn Yue) gets more than he bargained for when he stops a car for a driving violation, and finds a dead woman in the trunk and a gun in his face. Just as the psychotic driver is about to shoot, the woman's corpse suddenly sits up, and Lee shoots dead the momentarily distracted killer. After relaying his ghostly encounter to his superior, Lee gets shuffled to the orphan Miscellaneous Affairs Department where paranormal cases are handled. The first day on the job, Inspector Wong (Ekin Cheng) tells Lee their job is to uphold Rule #1 and reassure citizens that there are no ghosts, even as they put their lives on the edge hunting down the malicious ghost responsible for a series of mysterious deaths. While most ghosts are harmless, there are some powerful, vengeful spirits that spread like virus to all humans they touch, and this particular ghost seems to be out to get Lee and Wong.
